LaMia Ashley...Editor Extraordinaire!

Hi, Everyone. Now that you all have had time to explore what I do, let me tell you who I am and how I got started. 

For those who haven't interacted with me, I'm LaMia Ashley. I do business as Lethal Red Pen, offering my editing services to up-and-coming authors, seasoned authors, or everyday laypeople. I've been lending a hand in editing for 15 years now. Not many people know how a social worker from New Jersey became an editor for some of literature’s most elite authors. Well, as the story goes… After reading one of her classic pieces, I slid into the DM of a very gifted author. I noticed that some grammatical issues took away from an otherwise flawless read, even giving her the pages on which the errors were and the revisions. I offered to edit for her before even knowing what that entailed.

I just knew I wanted her to shine the way her work deserved to. She took the suggestions and said that she would keep me in mind. Months went by, and I just knew she had blown me off. I received a return DM from the author, telling me that all my findings were correct and asking if the offer still stood. Y'all, I was in the club when I read the DM. My friends and I were there celebrating like I won a Grammy after I replied, telling her I was still interested. 

After that one encounter, we worked together on several projects. I became more comfortable introducing myself to some of literature’s veterans in the game and started working with them, and word of mouth ensued. I'm 15 years in, and editing is still a pleasure due to my first love of reading. Growing up, I would read the phone book, ingredients on the back of products, everything. I just LOVE to read. I was the kid who couldn't wait to spend my money at the school book fair. Today, I'm a mom, and I get so excited to send my son to school with funds on his Scholastic book fair card. 

Life has taken unexpected turns, so I’m no longer a full-time social worker. Besides being a mom to my four-year-old son, the one constant thing in my life is that I’m still editing, still helping authors take their works of art to masterpieces. I'm still in love with the art form like I was as a child, and like the day I slid into the DM of one of the most talented and respected author’s DM.
