Benefits of an Editor: What a professional editor does

Hey, y'all. If you're self-publishing or just trying to be frugal, I know cutting corners or expenses sounds like a good idea when considering how much professional editing could cost. However, having your work professionally edited has several benefits, which could save you money in the long term. If you cut corners, leaving your work with errors that hinder your sales, drop your reviews, earn you a lousy grade, or worse, make it hard for people to take you seriously, you could cost yourself time (by having to do it over) and money (by having to have it re-edited and re-printed). It’s better to get it right the first time.

Here’s what your professional editor can offer you:

  • Editors review all written material to help improve the clarity and flow of documents.

  • Editors review all written material to ensure documents are free from spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors.

  • Editors ensure your voice and tone are easily projected to whomever the document is intended, making it easily readable.

  • Editors give opinions and suggestions to make documents more efficient and effective.

  • Editors and authors work together to make the author's written work the best version it can be.

  • Editors proofread written material to give it a final assessment and ensure it is ready for all types of submission.

When you try to edit your documents yourself, serious mistakes are made because you know what you want or are trying to say. When you have it edited by someone who doesn't have the qualifications to review documents, they are not skilled in what to look for, and again, serious mistakes are overlooked. If you want friends and family to review your material, let me suggest using them as test readers, which is also a significant step in the writing process. Test readers are invaluable, but they're not editors. Let's leave editing to the people who are skilled in performing the task.

Happy writing, folks!
